I managed to get a hold of Claudia and we have the concept for the cupcakes down, along with a cute little 6″ cutting tier on top. I’m really excited to see how they turn out~ I’m not going to lie, any cupcakes left over after the wedding I will probably take home with me and proceed to stuff my face with them over the following days/weeks. OM NOM NOM NOM.
Finally got around to designing the inside of our invitations as well as the direction and RSVP inserts. Some time over the next couple of weeks we’ll try printing them out on the actual card stock and assemble a whole sample invite from start to finish before we settle down for a girls night where we all sit and watch movies while making fifty more of them, assembly-line style.
Together with my mom and sistah, we met up downtown and took a walk through the Tucker Amphitheatre to get a lay of the venue and nail down some finer details like decorations and where the bridal party will be hiding and walking down during the ceremony. It’s nice to have a bit of an idea of how things will actually work on the day-of. We also visited ABC Weddings to look at prices of things like linens and chair covers.
Look, I’m being all productive again! \o/
The rental rep from the Citadel finally got back to me on the 2011 bookings and says we’re good to go for renting the Tucker Amphitheatre on May 7th!

We’ve been skipping back and forth between the 12:30 and 3:30 time slots for the ceremony, but we’ve officially decided to change it to 12:30. While it does mean that our morning will be a little more rushed, we’ll also have more than enough time for photos after the ceremony now~ Our booking lasts for two hours so I think we’ll probably schedule the ceremony for around 1:30 or so.

McLeod Community League wins out!
Among the usual league amenities (kitchen, stage, bar, coat room, etc) it’s newly renovated, it’s clean, and it has round tables! — all things that I’ve discovered during my venue search that very few community halls actually have. ^^; The round tables were a feature I was particularly set on. You just can’t have the same open table conversations around rectangular tables, the people at the ends always get shunned. No end-table shunning for our guests, says I!

It’s nice to finally get the reception venue settled, now I need the Citadel to get back to me on their availability.

Went and (finally) got to see another candidate for the reception venue — Lorelei-Beaumaris Community League. Verdict: pleased! It was much nicer than the other hall I viewed — clean, with recently renovated kitchen, bar, and bathrooms (all nicely tiled!) The bar in particular is nice, it’s not just one of those little windows looking into a tiny cramped room; it’s actually situated right out in the hall and could potentially have a bit of seating at it. (The photos on the website are very dark and badly angled to show it.) There’s a big coat room we can use, and the hall is large enough that we could have full dinner seating and the dance floor available without having to rearrange tables at all. The only downside is that they only offer rectangular tables when I’d prefer circular (better for conversation, no one is stuck alone at either end.) Rental price for a Saturday 8 a.m. to 4 a.m. the next morning is $450, plus a damage deposit of $500 (and an extra $50 to use all of their dishes) which doesn’t seem too bad.
Compared to other halls I’ve talked to that only have a microphone PA system, this one also has a new multimedia system (music and video projection) available to use; however, it’s an extra $300 to rent plus an $800 damage deposit. Is the whole big music speaker thing and sound system something that the DJ usually handles or is this an extra perk that we should be latching onto? :x
There’s another community hall that may be a strong runner up from what I can tell from the pictures online, but I’ll have to arrange an appointment to go view it in person.

Sunday, January 24th at Northlands! Bridal Expo! I will totally be there with anyone who wants to come with me! Mark it on your calendars and let me know if you’re interested in going~ Hopefully I can win a cool wedding-related door prize! :D
On a sour note, I am getting really sick of people not phoning me back regarding venues. I’ve shouldn’t have to phone and leave messages more than twice (preferably once!) to have you call me back within a couple of days. It really irks me when companies can’t even get their shit together enough to make contact with prospective clients trying to give them money.
Speaking of which, I finally got in touch with the Citadel only to have them tell me that they wouldn’t be able to guarantee our ceremony booking until March of 2010 because they won’t get their 2011 theatre scheduling in until then. Mother eff. So now I’m on a waiting list for the next three months waiting to hear back and all the while I have no idea what to do between now and then in regards to ceremony venues. *Shakes fists of squealy, boiling tea kettle type rage!*
On a less sour note, Chelle’s friend Jonny (with Jason volunteering as emergency backup if the need arises) agreed to bar tend for our reception! YAY! We’re thinking of making it a toonie bar so the booze will be cheap, but we’ll make at least some of the money back.
Update on discount designer dress hoopla: I received a reply back from romanticgowns.com and, as expected, my coveted Alfred Sung dress is $1,600. ;_; Realistically I wasn’t really expecting any less, but the mere chance was too good to pass up at least checking it out. Le sigh. Maybe I can find something similar-ish in a boutique.
Update on venues: Still working on it. With some places you just know as soon as the conversation starts that it’s going to be way over your budget. I let them go through the schpeal, listening politely and trying to sound interested as whatever rental rep I’m talking to goes through the pricing, but instead of jotting down notes I just wrote a giant red NO on my list. =_= On the upside, it’s narrowed down the number of places I have to phone considerably and makes the task a little less daunting.
We figure we’re probably going to go the community hall route for the reception. They’re much more affordable than any hotel and offer all of the amenities we’d need, including the fact they allow off-site catering. There’s a bunch in our general end of the city that I’ve contacted, and I went to an open house of one last week which was fine (though a bit ratty.) I’m going to another one this next Monday with higher expectations if the pictures on the site are an accurate representation at all.
A venue for the ceremony is a little more difficult. The reception party is one thing, but I’d rather not be actually married at a community hall. :P I did a second round of calls tonight and got some leads on some potential sites that are a bit fancier, but I’m still waiting back on return calls for most of them.
Current list of possible ceremony venues as it stands now:
- Citadel (in the lead so far)
- Varscona Hotel
- Royal Alberta Museum
- Days Inn & Suites (refused to host ceremony only — cheapskates!)
- Muttart Conservatory (not big enough to hold everyone)
- St. Albert Inn (also refused to host ceremony only *grumblegrumble*)
- Royal Glenora Club
Reception venue possibilities:
- Lorelei-Beaumaris Community League (in the lead so far)
- Moose Lodge Hall (no outside catering)
- UofA Faculty Club (very rude customer service on the phone!) D:
- Royal Canadian Legion (also very rude! WTF.)
- Polish Hall (no outside catering)
- Londonderry Community Hall
- Northmount Community League
- Athlone Community League
- Kilkenny Community Hall
- Belvedere Community League
- Caernarvon Community Hall
- McLeod Community League
