A masked avenger, or villain, usually has one thing the truly defines them and sets them apart from all the other villains; their theme. With that theme comes the obligatory costume. That is to say, costumes are one of the easiest identifiable objects that Batman could get his hands on, if he wanted a keepsake (like Jason Todd's costume.) I don't agree with you there, Ben.
